Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is just 5km outside the village of McGregor, an easy 45 minutes’ drive from Worcester and is open to the public Thursdays to Sundays from 10am to 4pm. There is no entrance fee, but donations are welcomed.

Visitors experience professionally-led guided visits to our rescued donkeys. Groups of six and more are asked to pre-book please.

This is an ideal opportunity for visitors to meet and adopt one of our donkeys, and for existing adopters to come and cuddle their chosen long ears!

Our Coffee Shop is in a tranquil garden setting next to our dam teeming with abundant birdlife. We are licensed to sell wine and regional craft beer.

Our book shop has a wide range of excellent books while our gift shop sells many donkey-themed gift items. Our branded Eseltjiesrus wine is a perfect gift and memento of your visit. The proceeds from these sales all go towards the care of our donkeys.

Enjoy a meditative walk leading to a memorial cairn, historic farm implements and breath-taking views of the mountains.

We are pet friendly – so please feel free to bring Fido along – as long as he (or she) remains on a lead.

Our motto of “Creating a culture of caring” has shown an increase in awareness about these often maligned creatures. Your visit to Eseltjiesrus will leave you in awe of how intelligent and important donkeys really are. In turn, we know we will have found another Donkey Ambassador!

The patron of Eseltjiesrus is famous South African singer and producer, David Kramer.

David was born and grew up in Worcester and was awarded the Freedom of the Town in 2020.
