Innovation for the Blind – (a programme of Badisa)
Innovation for the Blind (previously Institute for the Blind), situated in the Care Capital town of South Africa, Worcester, is a non-profit organisation that has been catering to the all-inclusive, specialised needs of visually impaired adults since 1881. Our mission is to empower adults with visual impairments through training, development, and care to experience quality of life and reach maximal levels of independence, and to offer specialised care and support to older persons.
Innovation for the Blind: Services offered to the public
Low vision: Low vision is the term used to describe significant visual impairment that can’t be corrected fully with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or eye surgery.
SERVICE: Low vision Group Presentation
A demonstration of low vision assistive devices and a discussion on the needs of people with partial sight as well as people who support or work with people with vision loss.
SERVICE: Assessments of individual needs
A personal assessment of the needs of a person with partial sight is done. Advice is available regarding assistive devices for the individual and his or her employers or family.

Metal department: Metal and steel products are manufactured with precision for engineering companies as well as the local agricultural community by persons with visual impairments.
Creative workshop: Manufacturing of arts, crafts, and packaging of products and production line contracts. Manufactured items are sold in our shop or directly to clients by special order.
General projects: A variety of employment options are offered within this department including but not limited to the creation of quality woven products, repairing cane products, and woodwork.
Coffee packaging: Packaging and distribution of our own range of specially roasted coffee beans and ground coffee.
Gardening service: This team not only tends to the gardens on our premises, but they also provide paid gardening services to the local community.
Laundry service: Laundry services are rendered to our residents at our 4 residential facilities as well as paying patrons from the community.

Innovation for the Blind: Services offered to our residents
Care facilities: We offer specialised residential care and supported living apartments to persons with visual and additional impairments in facilities that provide reasonable accommodation specifically adapted to their needs.
Therapeutical: At Innovation for the Blind, we offer various therapeutic services to our visually impaired and multi-disabled residents. These programmes are seen as therapeutic as they allow residents to develop and explore their individual talents.
Skills development: Our organisation continuously explores new innovative and economically viable opportunities in aid of our core focus on caring for persons with visual and additional impairments.
Orientation & Mobility: Orientation and Mobility, or O&M, is a profession that focuses on instructing individuals who are blind or visually impaired with safe and effective travel through their environment.
Resource Centre: A centre where persons who are blind, deafblind, and those with additional disabilities can receive training and mentorship, but more importantly, be given the opportunity to conduct the training and mentorship themselves.
